VISA AND OTHER PROCEDURES
Hawaii is the 50th US state. Entry into the archipelago goes by the same rules as entry into the continental United States.
HEALTH CARE
Hawaiian authorities do not require the visitor to provide proof of vaccination. There is no risk of contracting malaria or any other risk that should be highlighted. For more information see FitForTravel
TRIP TO HAWAII
A Star Alliance flies from Lisbon to Honolulu, with the TAP and US Airways or United Airlines, as a rule, with two scales, per from 1000 euros.
INTERNAL FLIGHTS
After the deactivation of the superferry service, the connection between islands is invariably air and operated by several companies: Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, mokulele. In a good way in the USA, the unbridled competition between these companies provides cheaper prices for passengers, as low as €25 or €30 for some one-way flights between islands.
CAR RENTAL
The ideal is to make the reservation as far in advance as possible and pick up the vehicle at the arrival airport. With due advance notice and, even more, if it is also low season you can get very affordable prices, from €20 a day, €25 to €45 in high season. As if that wasn't enough, there are still several companies that rent older cars at prices below the most popular rent-a-car.
TRUCK
Oahu is the only island that can be decently explored by public transport.
OTHER
On the larger islands there are several companies that provide their own full-day and half-day tour itineraries for around €70 and €50, respectively.
The weather in Hawaii is hot all year round. Winter, from December to February, is the wettest season and summer, June to October and autumn, October to December, is the driest. The islands of the archipelago have similar weather patterns, with the north-facing coasts receiving most of the moisture and rain and the opposite being drier and more arid. For more information, see the page dedicated to Hawaii. National Weather Service Forecast Service
The local currency is the US dollar (USD) 1 euro = 1.35 dollars. There are ATMs in all villages and payment with credit cards is usual for both residents and visitors.
The Hawaiian archipelago has a reputation for being expensive, but the truth is that the more or less stable supremacy of the Euro against the US dollar contributes to significantly smooth costs.
ACCOMMODATION
Stays range from €30 in a double room at a Waikiki guest house to hundreds of euros a night at the best resorts on Oahu and other islands. In high season, book well in advance.
FOOD
If we take the bars and restaurants and even supermarkets of Waikiki as an example, Hawaii has to be considered an expensive destination. But if you travel around the islands in a rental car, you will find that prices drop significantly. Consider 20 to 25€ the minimum value for a complete meal in an average restaurant.
INTERNET
It is provided by almost all types of accommodation and, even outside the largest cities, it has very pleasant speeds (up to 50 Mbps) for an archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are internet cafes and paid hotpspots (but some are also free) in almost every village.
